Sometimes it’s happening quick, sometimes it takes longer, but in the end its always deadly, and you will find yourself in the middle of a beautiful continent called Africa installing rope pumps in a village, inspiring teachers of the future or organising Positive Living Clubs for those fighting against HIV/AIDS. Which means you’d better to start PACKING! If you hurry, maybe even I can meet you here J
What you will need? Let’s make a list, in order not to leave anything important behind. First you will need love for others, as much as possible of it. Then you will also need courage, the one that last at least for a year, but no worries if you short of it, we always have some spare left in the storage. Don’t leave your willpower, creativity and curiosity at home as they will be in good use here. No more space left in the baggage? Look, the side packets are all empty, so fill them up with an open-mind, you can even roll up it, if it turns out to be too big; don’t worry, we will help you to unfold it again. ‘Minds are like parachutes- they only function when they open’ - said a wise man one day who knows a lot about life.
But what about all the things I am leaving behind? Can’t I take everything? What about my old lifestyle, home, my friends, family and all the things I like? Am I not going to miss them too much? Well, you might, at least in the beginning. But they won’t disappear forever, and you can go back to them after you followed your dreams. But count with the symptoms of the “love for others” disease. It will affect all your senses. You will look at things in a different way for sure, realising how much you took for granted before, meanwhile millions of others can’t even dream about them… being able to go to doctor if not feeling well, the possibility of studying or enjoying to look at children who can be “just children” without working hard or struggling with diseases, an evening out with your friends… all the things you have always found normal will become something special and precious for you. The water is going to taste different, and the Sunday lunch too but you will be happier and more content afterwards - I promise.
You might find yourself talking about issues in the world and you may turn out to be less worried about things that bothered you before. You will see quicker the beggar on the street and also the ones sleeping without shelter and strangely enough you may listen to more news about fighting poverty. Your hands and legs are moving and will try to help the ones in need. Of course it is not possible to help all of them but doing all you can is more than enough.
You won’t be alone on your journey, but do not expect a crowd around you. There will never be many like you in the world but the power of love and willingness to help others that you have inside you can create miracles – it’s the strongest, unbreakable material existing in the world. Nobody can beat it, ruin it or take it away from you. “The world lies in the hand of those who have the courage to dream and who take the risk of living out their dreams- each according his or her own talent”- said the same wise man as well. Try it out, and we will see if it’s still works that way!
Even if I never meet you, we are connected now through the desire of helping others forever.
